What is Precast Concrete?

Precast is steel-reinforced concrete in a mould that is cured for a specific purpose. It is made-to-order from ready-mixed concrete in our factory. After it is cured we deliver it to the construction site as a finished product. Examples of precast products include wall panels, beams, columns, stairs, motorway barriers and flooring.

Formwork is generally prepared each morning, structural steel rebar is placed, and the panels are cast in the late afternoon. These panels are then cured overnight, lifted the following morning and the process begins again, five to six days a week. This pattern of production takes advantage of the low demand for ready-mixed concrete in the afternoons and keeps our costs down for our customers.

Note: there is a distinction between the precast poured in a facility such as Stevenson Precast, and ‘tiltslab’. Tiltslab is a type of precast that is poured onsite (i.e. on the construction site) and lifted (‘tilted’) directly into place. We do not currently provide any tiltslab services. This is due to the difficulties in maintaining quality when providing this type of operation.

Types of Precast Product

Warehouse Panels

Maximum weight 14 tonnes Maximum length – not applicable as the weight will restrict size and transport capability – usually 14.5 metres reach maximum. Maximum width – 3.7 metres due to gantry restrictions. Note: we are able to pour wider panels if we flat lift (maximum size ever poured 5.2 metres) Panel thickness – anything from 100 mm to 190 mm on standard aluminium sides. Thickest panels poured at Stevenson’s precast were 500 mm (steel moulds were manufactured for this job).

 

Structural Panel

Weight and size dimensions as above Thickness 125mm up to 400mm as a rule Height restriction same as above
