Gleeson and Cox Transport
Gleeson & Cox Transport is one of Auckland’s longer established bulk haulage companies. The company has evolved from its early rural beginnings over 40 years ago to become one of the larger bulk tipper fleets in Auckland, with a fleet of over 65 trucks. It also operates three supply yards at Whenuapai, Glenfield and Wiri.
As one of the largest transport companies in Auckland, Gleeson & Cox is also one of Stevenson Resources’ largest clients.Gleeson & Cox operate a modern fleet of vehicles, which includes truck and trailers, artics, 6 and 8-wheelers and toy tippers. The company has specialised in carting aggregates, scoria, sand, topsoil and clay, but it also seasonally carts lime, fertilizer, coal and grain.
‘Gleeson & Cox has been a customer of Stevenson’s for 30-plus years,’ says Alan Bosselmann. ‘As our company has grown, our involvement with Stevenson’s Drury Quarry has also increased. We buy and sell around a million tonnes of aggregate annually. Stevenson is our key supplier for a number of grades of metal, which we buy in volume, predominantly base courses and hardfill. Since the introduction of the pugmill at the Drury Quarry, gradings have been improved to provide a more consistent product. Thanks to the Stevenson Laboratory staff, we can also provide our clients with historic data on the products over the past 12 months to satisfy their engineers.
‘We enjoy good dialogue on a day-to-day basis with Shane Toto, the Quarry Manager. He deals smartly with any issues that arise. We also have an excellent working relationship with Transport Manager Leigh Mansell, who provides timely pricing. Steve Ellis, General Manager of the aggregates division, is also very
approachable.’
In an industry that is notoriously fickle and predominantly driven by price, the two companies have succeeded in developing a degree of rapport, trust and respect. ‘If any issues come up we’ll sit around the table and discuss them. When Stevenson Resources say they’ll do something, they do it and they honour their prices,’ says Alan.
‘The Quarry has responded to our requirements and the turnaround time through the quarry is excellent. We can send most of our fleet to the quarry at 6am and, due to the large number of loaders and the efficient weighbridge team, the trucks are gone within a very short time.
‘A key requirement for us is the Drury Quarry’s capability to move a large amount of product in a short time,’ he says. ‘We visit every quarry in the Auckland region and, without exception, the Drury Quarry offers the most extended loading hours. We provide their weighbridge operators with our requirements in advance so they know if they’ll have to gear up extra loaders. We’ve made unusual and demanding requests over the years and Stevenson has always done its best to accommodate us. Occasionally we’ll need to load up the trucks at 5.30am. We need this kind of flexibility to remain profitable.’
