Stevenson has a long proud history in the New Zealand coal mining industry, which began in 1948 at Kopuku Mine (since renamed Kopako). We became involved in the overburden stripping operation, which soon developed into the largest of its kind in the country.  Our involvement in the industry continued with Glencoal Energy in the mines at Kopako, Renown and Pirongia.

Current  Projects

Rotowaro, Waikato - We are the main contractor at Rotowaro Mine near Huntly.  Owned by Solid Energy NZ, it is one of New Zealand’s largest open cast coal mines with over 120 on site staff.

Coaldale, Southland – North east of Invercargill, Coaldale Mine is owned by Takatimu Coal.  As the main contractor at the mine, Stevenson has 40 on site staff.

Te Kuha, West Coast - In 2011 Stevenson Mining entered into a limited partnership with the historic owner of a mining permit located on land about 10km from Westport known as Te Kuha.  Stevenson's mandate is to explore the resource, develop a mine plan and to apply for the required resource consents and access agreements.  During the first half of 2012 exploratory drilling was undertaken to determine the quantity and quality of the coal resource at Te Kuha.
