Mark Dexter
Stevenson Environmental Health and Safety Manager
Responsible for the Environmental, Health and Safety Performance of the company, Mark has worked to provide a structured framework for managing EH&S. One of Mark’s key objectives is to ensure that safety is paramount in all Stevenson workplaces. “NO HARM to People, Places and Property” is Mark’s mantra.
Health and Safety
Mark sees one of Stevenson Group’s key advantages being its strong focus on the Health and Safety of its 685 employees, as well as its consideration of the border communities it operates within. This recognition has led to the engagement and contribution by Stevenson staff with the wider communities.
Environmental Performance
Because the success of the business as a whole depends on the sustainable use of natural resources, the Stevenson Group takes sustainability very seriously across our diverse business operations – from Engineering to Agriculture, Concrete and Extractive. The issue of climate change has also drawn managements’ attention to the Group’s carbon footprint - providing the impetus to holistically manage many environmental initiatives that had been under way across the group.
To this end Mark began developing the company’s sustainability policy and action plan. Mark is committed to increasing the Stevenson Group’s energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions. A deft understanding of the life cycle of the Stevenson products (and the greenhouse gas emissions generated in their manufacture) is required in order to reduce energy and water consumption and waste generation. Mark’s ultimate objective is to guide the Group to reducing GHG emissions by 10 percent by 2010.
‘Building our capacity to succeed in a low carbon economy will provide new business opportunities,’ says Mark. ‘Understanding the life cycle of our products and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their manufacture will offer us unique opportunities that will enable us to realise efficiency targets and reduce our GHG emissions.’
‘Implementing sustainability initiatives will reduce our operating costs, improve our operational efficiencies and provide a means of differentiating our products, as well as driving innovation.
Our Policy is in line with Stevenson’s commitment to using our resources wisely. Through this approach we will be in a fantastic position to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Our objective is to reduce our GHG emissions by 10 percent by 2010. This will be achieved by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills by 20 per cent, reducing the energy use and water consumption by five per cent, and innovating by incorporating recycled material in our products where possible.’
